In the context of interpersonal interactions, there are times when the common fight, flight, and freeze responses are not available as viable options for our protection and defense. The nature of social interactions is considerably more complex and demands a more complete understanding.
In this context, a neurophysiological response emerges that is now studied in terms of "appeasement." It is characterized by linking our mammalian capacity for social participation and connection with our previously recognized and studied autonomic defense system.
Knowledge of the conditions and characteristics that activate this fourth defensive response (coupled with fight, flight, and freeze) enriches our understanding of how sociocultural conditioning corresponds to the instinctual nature of our bodies.
This talk will explore the following points:
- The physiological basis of the appeasement response
- The difference between appeasement and other defensive responses
- A detailed analysis of the individual, relational, and social elements that constitute an inseparable part of our human experience
- An introduction to clinical alternatives for somatic work with this response pattern

* To access the face-to-face appeasement workshop to be held from 6-8 December with Mariana Boccuzzi, it is essential to have attended this talk in which the theoretical framework will be established. The workshop is also open to those who have attended SE Spain's appeasement workshop in January 2025 or AESE's appeasement workshop in March 2024.
Those who register for the December workshop will receive a €50 discount on their registration fee for their participation in this talk. Those who attended the SE Spain appeasement talk in January 2025 will also be eligible for the discount.
Instructor: Mariana Boccuzzi Raymundo
I am a woman, a mother, a psychologist, a psychotherapist and a teacher in relational systemic psychotherapy, as well as in Somatic Experiencing. My clinical approach with individuals, families, and couples integrates psychotherapy and SE. This allows me to address relational issues with special attention to the body and its physiology.
My particular interest lies in the study of issues pertaining to human development, attachments and relationships. The “discovery” of the physiological basis of the appeasement response, although familiar in daily clinical practice, has added a new dimension of depth and clarity in the understanding of our interpersonal relationships.
